ARCATA – A CITY REFRESHED BY THE HUMBOLT

Arcata is a city adjacent to the Arcata Bay (northern of Califórnia, 110 miles south of the Oregon State ) in Humboldt County, Califórnia, whose population is estimated around 18.000. Arcata is located, near Eureka, in Humboldt County , the gateway to the Pacific Northwest and border in the heart of the Redwood country. Mild climate and beautiful scenery attract thousands of visitors each year to the forest and beaches. Like all Californian cities, Arcata grow up by the side and not to the highest like a majority of European cities. The downtown portion of Arcata includes an old fashioned square with centrepiece park where people love to read a book, take for a walk, look at the flowers and eat a lunch or a dinner. Shopping, art galleries and restaurants are the main businesses in the Arcata’s downtown. In Arcata has place an important university: Humboldt State University , founded in 1913, then one of the oldest colleges in the California State University system. Arcata's climate is good, not so warm not so cold, because is dominated by marine influences of Humboldt Cold Current in the Pacific North. Arcata, in the beginning, was demanded by Portuguese people because its excellent port and good waters to fishing, and also has important gold mines at the Klamath, Trinity, and Salmon mountains to the east. Today still living in Arcata many Portuguese, luso-americans and their descendents that whit her jobs, houses, farms, business, and whit an incredible force of work, give an interesting testimony of dignity and proud of us all. In Arcata lives José, Lucindo and Maria, Octávio and Victória, Zoraida and her sons, also very kind and lovely persons.
